Facebook has just announced that it intends to make the new Facebook timeline compulsory which is still ok, but I have a serious issue that when Facebook does this, that by default Facebook will make your timeline public.  ALL and I mean ALL your information, including posts will be made public and open to the entire world.

What also concerns me and I wasn’t aware of this is that you have only 7 days in which to change your privacy settings and I’m guessing this is to do with your posts, your old past posts.  So if you have not changed this within 7 days then everything you and your friends posted from the day you joined Facebook will be made public.

The other very big concern is that by default anything you post is set to public, in other words, if you do not go and specify that you only want your friends to see the post then it is going to be posted for the world to see. You now have to remember to make sure you set your anything you post to “friends only” before posting it on Facebook.

I don’t think this is cool at all, I think it’s a darn cheek for them to do this.  I’ve gone and played around with the Facebook privacy settings to see exactly what is what, and it does take some thinking and planning, especially if you are someone who is very serious about having an online presence.

When it comes to having an online presence, one of the key planning and implementation stages is to position yourself via your profile in the market place.  Whether you are in business or looking for a job it’s important that you display key information on your profile so when potential partners and employers go looking for you, they will find information about you that will be relevant to them.

The annoying thing about the Facebook settings is that it lists literally every single place you worked at, which is all fine and well but seriously when it comes to privacy and idenitity fraud you don’t necessarily want everything about you to be made public knowledge.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t!   It’s good to make known that you’ve worked for certain companies as well as certain sectors but Facebook really makes it impossible for you to do this unless  you set your privacy settings to public and then it displays all of your employment history including dates.  So what’s the solution?

I would say, set your employment history to friends only and make your about information public.  Write a good bio of yourself, stating what your specialist area is, incorporate your key phrases and who you work with and something personal.  That’s my advice.

If you want to see how your profile looks to the world?

  • Click on your name
  • On the right side of the page, click on the gear and select view as

If you are not on the new timeline I suggest you go do this instead of waiting for Facebook to do it for you.  You can do this by visiting a friends profile who is already on the timeline and at the top right select, get timeline.

Then immediately check your privacy settings and to prevent your old posts from being public:

  • Click on the top right corner
  • Go to privacy settings.
  • Look for, limit the audience for past posts
  • Manage past post visibility and select limit old posts.
  • or change the audience by clicking on the small pencil icon top right of individual
posts to edit or hide from timeline.

How do you feel about this invasion of privacy?
